Persian Jazz on a Fretless Guitar – Payam Trio

While Maddah’s percussion makes sense of the fusion it’s the fretless guitar which is the star here with it’s subtle straddling of east-western musical shapes. The hanging, empty spaces in the melody are what have always characterised Maddah’s music, as it is in his other project The Babak Maddah Group, yet with the Payam Trio he’s picking up on more commonly recognised jazz forms and playing with the sequences, rather than with notes integrally and continuously in the music, thus the music twists from western to middle eastern jazz at a turn.
