300 Rise of an Empire

The Persian Empire Strikes Back, once again…

After the 2007 blockbuster Sword and Sandals hit 300 based on Frank Miller’s comic book adaptation of the Persian Greek Battle of Thermopylae (the Hot Gates), Warner Bros. is producing the sequel to the former epic tale : 300 Rise of an Empire.

Despite it’s box office success the former epic film triggered controversy and anger amongst Iranians equally in the diaspora and in Iran for what they deemed as an unflattering, fictional portrayal of the Persians and particularly of the Persian King of Kings Xerxes depicted as a bald nearly licentious despot (see related article in Persian Mirror: 300 Triggers Royal Response and the premonitory post here by myself regarding Hollywood’s attitude to Iran on film.)

The upcoming sequel is based on Frank Miller’s latest graphic novel “Xerxes”, and told in the same breathtaking visual style as in Zack Snyder’s 300.

Snyder was initially planning to direct the prequel but was deeply involved in the upcoming Superman film: Man of Steel, he had to decline and passed on the screenplay to Naom Murro. The film stars Eva Green (Artemisia), Rodrigo Santoro (Xerxes), Sullivan Stapleton (Themistocles), Lena Headey (Queen Gorgo) in the title roles.

The plot is as follows :

After its victory over Leonidas’ 300, the Persian Army under the command of Xerxes marches south towards the major Greek city-states. The Democratic city of Athens, first on the path of Xerxes’ army, bases its strength on its fleet led by admiral Themistocles. Themistocles is forced to an unwilling alliance with the traditional rival of Athens, oligarchic Sparta whose might lies with its superior infantry troops. But Xerxes still reigns supreme in numbers over sea and land.
