A landmark exhibition is taking place. For nearly ten years now we’ve been following the work of Atefeh Khas and it gave us great pleasure to finally see photos of hers in Belgium this year as part of a major group show of Iranian female artists. Now, though, she takes on a curatorial role bringing together a website of Iranian video art and a burgeoning interest in Iranian art in Korea. Khas (B.1985) has recently taken part in environmental festivals organized by the Paradise Art Center in Polour, Iran, a residency retreat center founded by environmental sculptor, Dr. Ahmad Nadalian and is a 2011 Student of MA- Art Research in Alzahra University.

The notes to video PERSIArt supplied by the hosts in Korea:

The first outland exhibition of Videoartist

The birth of video art is often cited as the day in 1965 when Nam June Paik, a Korean-born Fluxus artist and musician, bought one of the first video cameras (a Sony Portapak) in New York City and filmed the Pope’s entourage crossing Fifth Avenue. On this day, video art was born. — from the book New Media in Art, by Michael Rush

In recent years, Iran has shown significant advancement in the realm of video art and many events have been organized to introduce the artists and their works. The “Video Artist” website is a step towards introducing Iranian video artists to the world. The site now features a touring exhibition of its artists in collaboration with Yatoo group (the Korean Nature Artists Association), organizers of the Geumgang Nature Art Biennale in South Korea. In this exhibition tour, 26 artworks will be on display, selected primarily for their focus on environmental trends and issues.

Curated by Iranian artists Fereshteh Alamshah and Atefeh Khas, this is the first overseas exhibition of the Video Artist members, held only one year since the category’s inception. One of the most important objectives of this exhibition is to share the concerns and ideas of Iranian video artists with other artists from around the world.
