Irish artist Micheal John Whelan speaks to us in the Emirates, where he is represented by the Grey Noise Gallery, UAE. Working in Berlin this is his first visit to Art Dubai, although he has previously made his film works in the desert in the Middle East. Here he speaks to us at Art Dubai 2014 for Falgoosh Radio about his love of geometry, cyclicality and film as a gateway. Whelan’s work spans different mediums; photographic, video, film and installation and with his films, there is a continuity in his study of time.
Whelan also divulges his future project about an albino humpback whale off the coast of Cairns, North Eastern Australia where he is due to hunt for a shot of the whale in August 2014. Much like the hunt for a white stag, many including the BBC have tried and failed to document a glimpse of this rare whale. Will Whelan, with his artistry that verges on the alchemical, manage it?
