This Week’s Six Pillars to Persia – Nigeria Soundscapes

Mary Evans Signature Paper Installation

Lagos, Nigeria

Lagos, Nigeria

Artist Mary Evans

Fine artist Mary Evans, commissioned with one of the Art Dubai Projects, and audio recordist Emeka Ogboh join Fari Bradley at the table to discuss the changing face and audio palette of Nigeria, and their personal relationship with the country, and even the continent.

Lagos Soundscapes is an ongoing sound project that explores Lagos as a vibrant African Mega city. The accumulated sound defines the character of the city of Lagos as the economic, commercial and cultural capital of Nigeria. The recordings made from this direct engagement with Lagos are applied creatively in sound art and installations by Emeka Ogboh a Nigerian new media artist. For him the architectonic of Lagos as a mega city, for example, opens up questions on cultural narcissism, third world mobility and globalization processes. This Lagos soundscapes project was part of the first World Listening Day in July 2010.

Emeka is also co-founder of the Video Art Network Lagos, a participant of the African Centre for Cities project on African Urbanism and the Locus Sonus International streaming project. He was a member of the Media Lab in Africa delegation to the 16th International Symposium on Electronic Art.

Mary Evans has received a number of significant commissions, awards and residencies, including a Smithsonian Artists Research Fellowship at National Museum of African Art, Washington, DC, in 2010. She typically uses paper as her medium or domestic products in paper, producing large-scale, site-specific work – sometimes with reference to highly-charged subjects, such as lynching in the Deep South or the slave trade. Her work has been exhibited extensively across the world including Farewell to Post-Colonialism at the 3rd Guangzhou Triennale in 2008, Port City (2007) at the Arnolfini, Bristol, and A Fiction of Authenticity: Contemporary Africa Abroad (2003), Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis. Evans is also an Associate Lecturer at Central St Martin’s College of Art in London.emeka3
