New Six Pillars Podcast: Curating Commercial Galleries

curating 51HAPFkSg2LThis week: art scenes in the UAE (3 of 4) exploring the role of curated shows at commercial galleries and the means of commissioning these shows from visiting curators, and the response of audiences outside of market forces to them.

Speaking are Isabelle van den Eynde of IVDE and her gallerist Maria Mumtaz , co-director Asma Shabibi of Lawrie Shabibi gallery, Ayyam gallery’s co-director Hesham Samawi and Umer Butt of Grey Noise galleries. All these galleries are based in Dubai’s industrial district in Al Serkal Avenue, where an arts scene has organically grown over the years, and where openings are often managed to occur simultaneously, allowing the public to move from opening to opening on foot in the same evening. This way, there is some cross-consciousness in curating at the avenue, while independent events are organised with different sensibilities, calling on a gallery’s core audience.

Guest produced by Wael Hattar of Young Curators, and Hind Mezaina of The Culturist in the United Arab Emirates.
