Six Pillars Broadcast: Blind Venice, Catalonia

catalonia bw-publicacio-ori-pdf-portada1 This week: as the 57th Venice Film festival opens in Venice, we hear from Biennale artist Antoni Abad on his boat tour project “The Venice Ones Doesn’t See”. Abad uses the internet as a creative & research platform, although he began his career as a sculptor. For The Venice One Doesn’t See or Unveiling the Unseen, Abad worked with the blind and visually impaired inhabitants of the city to ccatalonia2reate a sensory interpretation of the urban space. Exploring how his collaborators use their senses in different ways revealed hidden aspects of Venice. As per other projects, Abad explored the collective outreach via a mobile application, BlindWiki, created especially for the blind, that allowed them to record and publish impressions of any location in the city, as well as listen to them in situ.

cataloniacataloniaThe boat tour that leaves from the dock located in front of the exhibition space. Guided by people who are blind, passengers explore the city aboard a rowboat sampierota, the traditional Venetian voga boat. The tour lasts 20 minutes and is free for 4 passengers at a time. This sensorial experience, where the collective intelligence reclaims universal accessibility, suggests alternative ways to occupy public space, both physical and digital. Identifying as a Catalonian artist Abad was born in Spain in 1956 and was commissioned by Institut Ramon Llull and curated by Mery Cuesta and Rox Pares.
