White Noise, Directed by Mahshad Afshar premiered at the International Women’s Day 8 March evening in homage to the Woman, Life, Freedom Revolution in Iran.
This film shows the depth of misogyny and reaction that underpins sex apartheid and femicide in Iran. Using excerpts of actual footage from lectures on the Iranian clergy, on the position of women in society: “like animals but made to look like us so that are not scared of them.” Despite the shocking nature of the content, and its tragic consequences of so many years of this kind of teaching, it was hard not to laugh as we sat together in the audience, side by side.

Mahshad Afshar is an Iranian filmmaker, visual artist, and researcher living and working in London. Her work mostly draws on the aesthetic of painful otherness, body, memory, and politicised identity.
